How to Mark Up Photos in Acumatica: Introducing ES Image Editor
October 27, 2026
Why a photo alone isn't enough
A photo shows what a technician saw. It doesn't show what they meant. A cracked fitting, a missing anchor bolt or a scratch on a returned item can be hard to spot in a busy image, especially for someone reading the record days later.
Acumatica makes it easy to attach photos to service orders, appointments, projects and daily field reports. But until now, if you wanted to mark up photos in Acumatica with an arrow, a circle or a note, you had to download the image, edit it in another app and upload it again. That costs time, creates duplicate files and breaks the link between the photo and the record.
ES Image Editor removes those extra steps. Your team marks up the photo right where it lives: on the Acumatica record.
What is ES Image Editor?
ES Image Editor is an Acumatica customization that adds an Edit Photo command to the screens your field and project teams use every day. One click opens a browser-based photo editor showing every image attached to the record. Users draw their marks, click Save, and the marked-up photo goes straight back into Acumatica's standard file storage.
There's no separate app to buy, no extra login and no new place to store files. It installs as a standard Acumatica customization package, works in Acumatica's Modern UI and uses the Acumatica access rights you already have.
Key features for Acumatica photo annotation
Draw anything you need to point out. A freehand pen, lines, arrows, rectangles, ellipses, polygons and text notes. Marks default to a high-visibility red, and shapes are outlines so the detail underneath stays visible.
Fix the photo while you're there. Crop, rotate, flip, and adjust brightness and contrast to make a dark job-site photo readable.
Never lose the original. Choose Replace the photo to save the marked-up image as a new version of the same file, with the original kept in its history. Or choose Save as a new photo to keep the original untouched and attach a marked copy beside it.
All of a record's photos in one place. Thumbnails of every image on the record, newest first, so you can switch between them without leaving the editor.
Works with common image formats. JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP.
Sized for the field. Very large photos are scaled to 3,000 pixels on the long edge when saved, so uploads stay fast while images stay sharp.
Safe by default. Users are warned before closing or switching photos with unsaved marks.
Supported Acumatica screens
Version 1.2 adds Edit Photo to nine screens across Field Services, Projects, Construction and Inventory. It's built for Acumatica 2026 R1 and the Modern UI, where Edit Photo sits right on each screen's toolbar.
How to mark up a photo in Acumatica, step by step
Open a saved record that has a photo attached, for example an appointment or a daily field report.
Click Edit Photo on the toolbar. The photo editor opens in a new browser tab.
Pick the photo. The newest image opens automatically; click another thumbnail to switch.
Draw your marks. The pen is ready in red as soon as the editor opens. Add arrows, shapes or a text note as needed.
Choose how to save: replace the photo (the original stays in its history) or save as a new photo.
Click Save. A confirmation appears, and the marked-up photo is attached to the record.
Anyone who opens the record later sees exactly what the technician wanted to point out, without a phone call to ask.
Who uses it, and for what
Field service teams
Technicians circle the failed part on an appointment photo and add a short note, such as "replace this valve." Dispatchers and customers see the problem at a glance, and the next visit starts with the right part on the truck.
Construction and project teams
Superintendents mark defects on daily field report photos, highlight the area in question on a project issue, and point subcontractors to the exact spot in an RFI. Clear markups mean fewer back-and-forth emails and faster answers.
Equipment and asset tracking
Record damage or wear on equipment photos over time. With Save as a new photo, the original stays as evidence and the marked copy explains it, which is useful for warranty and insurance claims.
Inventory and receiving
Flag packaging damage or label issues on stock item photos so purchasing and warehouse staff know exactly what to check.
Built for IT: secure, standard and easy to roll back
Standard Acumatica storage. Photos are saved with Acumatica's own file API. No new tables, no outside storage.
Your security rules apply. Users must be signed in, and they only see photos from screens and records they're allowed to open.
Only people who can edit can save. Edit Photo works only for users with edit rights on the record. Each click gives the editor a secure pass tied to that record and that user, which expires after 4 hours. A bookmarked or shared editor link can't be used to change photos, even by someone who can view the record.
Protected saves. Save requests are checked for cross-site request forgery and validated for file type and size.
Simple deployment. Import and publish one customization package in Customization Projects. Unpublishing removes it cleanly, and photos already marked up stay attached as normal files.
Open-source editor. The drawing tools come from Filerobot Image Editor by Scaleflex, released under the MIT license, so there are no per-user fees for the editor component.
Self-contained, with no outside services. A fixed, tested version of the editor (Filerobot 4.8.1) is included in the customization package. Nothing loads from outside websites, photos never leave your Acumatica site, and the editor only changes when you install an update.
Fully documented. It comes with a technical specification, an end-user guide and a complete QA test plan.
Frequently asked questions
Can you annotate photos in Acumatica without a third-party app?
Acumatica does not include a built-in tool for drawing on photos. ES Image Editor adds one as a customization, so users can annotate photos directly from the record without downloading or re-uploading files.
Does marking up a photo overwrite the original?
No. Replace the photo saves a new version and keeps the original in the file's history. Save as a new photo leaves the original untouched and attaches a separate marked copy.
Which Acumatica version does ES Image Editor support?
Version 1.2 is built for Acumatica 2026 R1 and works in the Modern UI.
Does ES Image Editor work in the Acumatica Modern UI?
Yes. Version 1.2 has been tested in the Modern UI, where Edit Photo appears on the toolbar of each supported screen. As Acumatica moves to the Modern UI, that is where ES Image Editor is designed to run.
Does the editor connect to any outside service?
No. The editor is included in the customization package and runs on your own Acumatica site. It doesn't load anything from outside websites, and your photos never leave Acumatica.
Does it work in the Acumatica mobile app?
Not inside the native mobile app. Field teams can use Edit Photo in a phone or tablet browser, where drawing with a finger or stylus works.
Can Edit Photo be added to other Acumatica screens?
Yes. Any screen whose records support file attachments can be added with a small code change.
What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF and BMP. GIF and BMP photos are saved as new PNG files.
Make every photo in Acumatica say what you mean
Photos are only useful when everyone sees the same thing. ES Image Editor lets your team mark up photos in Acumatica in seconds, on the records they already use, without losing the original.
